How to Build a Sturdy Carport - Essential Steps & Tips

When it comes to building a carport in Oklahoma City, proper planning and execution are key. From selecting the right location to obtaining the necessary permits, each step plays a crucial role in the construction process. Learn about the essential considerations and steps involved in constructing a carport. If you are hiring professional carport builders in OKC, these tips will help you create a sturdy and functional structure that meets your needs. Understand the key factors to keep in mind before starting your carport construction journey.

What to Consider Before Constructing a Carport

Location Considerations

Selecting the right location for your carport is crucial. Before you start construction, identify where your utilities are located underground, such as electricity, gas, and water lines. Building over or near these lines can lead to costly damages and safety hazards. Carport builders considers the layout of your property and the proximity to your home for easy access. Additionally, think about the orientation of the carport to maximize sunlight and airflow.

Planning Permission

Before you begin building your carport, check with your local council to determine if you need planning permission. Carports are considered structures and must comply with local council regulations and the National Construction Code (NCC). Each council may have different requirements, so it's important to visit your local council offices or website for specific guidelines. Failure to obtain the necessary permits before hiring carport builders, can result in fines or having to dismantle the structure.

Tool Preparation

Carport builders assert that having the right tools is essential for building a carport efficiently and safely. Basic tools such as measuring tape, shovel, hand saw, hammer, string line, carpenter's square, G-clamps, spirit level, adjustable wrench and two ladders are essential. Additionally, power tools like an angle grinder circular saw, nail gun, rivet gun and hammer drill can help speed up the construction process. If you don't own these tools or anticipate using them frequently, consider borrowing or renting them to save on costs.

Essential Steps for Constructing a Carport – How Carport Builders Help

Marking Out the Ground

Expert carport builders clear the area where the carport will be erected and mark out the perimeters. Measure the desired width from the wall of your home (usually 3 meters) and parallel to your home (typically 6 meters). Drive pegs into the ground at each corner and insert hurdles just beyond each peg for string lines.

Stringing the Boundaries

Stretch string lines between the hurdles to outline a rectangle the size of the carport. Carport builders ensure each string touches two pegs. They remove the pegs, and the corners marked by the string lines indicate where the concrete post footings will be placed.

Verifying the Squareness

Measure diagonally from one corner to the other to verify if the space is square. Adjust if necessary to ensure the corners are at right angles.

Excavating for Posts

Carport builders dig holes at each corner for the posts, following the dimensions and depth specified in your building permit, which may vary based on soil type. For steel posts, use mounting plates on a cement slab with bolt holes drilled using a hammer drill.

Casting the Foundations

Mix enough cement for one hole at a time and pour it in. Place a post saddle in the center of the hole, ensuring it remains 25mm above the wet cement. Use a spirit level to ensure the saddle is level, and repeat for the other three holes.

Installing the Posts

Allow the cement to set for about a week before putting up the posts. Have a friend hold the post in the saddle while you use a spirit level to make it perfectly vertical. Drill a hole through the saddle holes and the post, insert a coach bolt and nut, and tighten to secure the post upright. Repeat this process for the other three posts.

Creating a Datum Line

Mark one of the upright posts at the desired roof height and use a spirit level to mark the same height on all four posts. Unbolt the posts, cut them to the desired height, and reattach them.

Attaching the Beams

While the posts are on the ground, cut out the housings for the beams with a saw. Reassemble the posts and, with the help of ladders and friends, place the beams horizontally into the housings, flush with the outside of the carport. Drill openings and secure the beams to the posts with coach screws.

Setting the Roof Fall

Hammer a nail at the front end of one side beam and run a string line to the other end, attaching a nail 40mm lower. Repeat on the other side beam and nail battens along the string lines. Cut battens to fit between the side beams and secure them every 900mm.

Attaching the Gutter and Downpipe

Install the gutter along the lower end of the carport (the back) using gutter clips. Ensure it has a slight slope for rainwater runoff. Connect the downpipe to the nearest stormwater drain.

The Construction of the Roof

Place steel roof sheeting across the rafters inside the side beams and attach it with appropriate fasteners. Apply cap flashing where the roof meets the edge of the beam for a waterproof edge.
